This resource list is a compilation of  members’ suggestions and is  not intended to provide expert advice on how to live with food allergies. Every child’s allergies are different. Please read food and product labels each time you purchase something for your child. As the parent/guardian, you know your child best. When in doubt, call your allergist, pediatrician, a medical professional and/or the manufacturer.


A

Allen’s Hill Farm -  They have a booth at the Fairport Farmer’s Market and sell mixes for various cookies and breads.  They would be good for food allergic individuals because there is no egg, milk, etc... in the mix. The mixes are all labeled and the sales man knows everything about the mix. The directions tell you how much of each to add and you could add the appropriate substitute when you make the product. Allergic Living Magazine: A quarterly magazine that costs $24.95, published in Toronto, Canada and is packed full of information related to food allergies. The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) is a nationally-known non-profit organization. FAAN solicits funds to help support research in the science of food allergies and they work with the government to change policies to protect individuals with food allergies. The most recent laws requiring food manufacturers to clearly list the top 8 allergens on their food products was enacted because of the work that FAAN has done. Their website is www.foodallergy.org. Annual membership to FAAN is $30 and includes a monthly newsletter loaded with helpful information, research, and recipes (children’s newsletters are also available).

Food Allergy Initiative - The Food Allergy Initiative (FAI) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that raises funds toward the effective treatment and cure for food allergies. www.foodallergyinitiative.org  This website has a number of helpful documents that you can download on your computer.

Fruit Flats (Wegmans brand): healthy version of fruit snacks, lots of fiber, grape, cherry, raspberry and strawberry flavors

Fruit Ripples-Made by General Mills found at Wegmans near granola bars. These are dried apple chips and come in two flavors (cinnamon apple and strawberry apple). Cinnamon apple flavor contains only apples, apple juice, and sodium sulfite

Hofmanns Skinless Wieners (company located in Syracuse) milk-free hotdogs, no longer in local Wegmans stores but can be found in the Geneva store. Also, Hofmanns carries regular hotdogs with skin in most Wegmans Deli Departments-you can purchase large bags of these if you ask a person in the Deli.

www.campcory.org YMCA’s Camp Cory offers 1 week long summer camp programs as well as extended camps for children between the ages of 7-17 on Keuka Lake. Children with food allergies have attended the camp. The kitchen staff is trained on food allergy precautions and the staff also has two EMTs as well as a nurse or paramedic always on duty. Camp Cory also has a family camp (camping in cabins for families) during Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. Check their website for more details.
